Reflections from the Agroecology Europe Forum 2025 🌀

By Julia Fritzsche

After more than two and a half years, I was happy to be back in Sweden and to meet inspiring and deeply motivated people, eat amazing Scandinavian agroecological food and attend many interesting sessions.

My personal highlights were meeting some of my fellow master’s students and people from the Stockholm Resilience Centre again, and the field visit to Rydeholm Farm, where I learned more about a nut-focused food forest garden.

After finishing my first round of data collection of my PhD research, which involved visiting over 50 farms, and farming projects across Brandenburg, I was able to present my initial findings at the Agroecology Europe Forum 2025.

My fieldwork focused on agroforestry farms, and the results clearly indicate that, on average, agroforestry farms perform better in nearly all elements of agroecology.

Therefore, agroforestry in all its forms seems to be an important measure for Brandenburg's future agroecological transition. 🌳

Some new, hopeful ideas that I took away from the forum are perennial grain polycultures, the concepts of agrowilding, Universal Basic Nutrient Income (UBNI), and future role sharing, e.g. 50:50 researcher and farmer, to meaningfully bridge two worlds.

A big thank you to the organizing team and all presenters for making it a memorable experience.💚
